United States Post Office and Courthouse: A Historic Building
The United States Post Office and Courthouse opened its doors in 1932. You can find it at 401 Market Street in Camden. This building was designed by the Office of the Supervising Architect, led by James A. Wetmore.
Building Style and Materials
The building has a special look called neoclassical Art Deco. This style combines classic designs with modern, decorative touches. The outside of the building is mostly made of strong materials like limestone, granite, and brick.
Inside, you'll find beautiful and colorful terracotta decorations. Terracotta is a type of baked clay used for art and building. There are also designs inspired by Spanish Colonial art. One special room, a ceremonial courtroom, has wooden panels on the lower part of the walls, called wainscot.
Modern Additions and Art
In 1999, a new section was added to connect two parts of the building on the second floor. This addition holds a unique piece of art. It's a large drawing called the Jersey Homesteads Mural by a famous artist named Ben Shahn. This mural was moved from its original home in Roosevelt, New Jersey, and is now safely displayed in a special gallery here.
This historic building also houses the United States Bankruptcy Court District of New Jersey. It is recognized as an important historical site and is listed on both the state and federal lists of historic places.
Mitchell H. Cohen United States Courthouse: The Annex
The Mitchell H. Cohen United States Courthouse is a newer building, completed in 1994. It was named in 1992 to honor a federal judge named Mitchell H. Cohen. The main entrance to this courthouse is on Cooper Street.
What's Inside the Courthouse
This building is seven stories tall. It has 12 courtrooms, which are rooms where legal cases are heard. It also includes offices for judges, a room for the Grand Jury (a group of citizens who decide if there's enough evidence for a trial), and the District Clerk's office. The U.S. Marshals Service, which helps keep the courts safe, also has offices here. There's even a secure area for holding prisoners and a law library.
