Up a Road Slowly is a coming-of-age novel written by American author Irene Hunt in 1966. This book won the famous Newbery Medal, which is a special award for excellent American children's literature. The story is about a young girl named Julie. Readers follow her journey as she grows up from age 7 to 17 while living in the countryside with her Aunt Cordelia and Uncle Haskell.
What Is Up a Road Slowly About?
The book begins when seven-year-old Julie's mother passes away. Julie is then sent to live with her Aunt Cordelia. Aunt Cordelia is a schoolteacher who has never married. She lives in a big house a few miles outside of town. Julie's Uncle Haskell lives in a small building behind the main house. He wants to be a writer, just like Julie.
Julie's brother, Chris, goes away to boarding school. This means Julie is often alone with Aunt Cordelia.
Julie's New Home and Family
At first, Julie is very sad and finds Aunt Cordelia to be strict. But as Julie gets older, she starts to love her aunt very much. Aunt Cordelia's house truly becomes Julie's home. Later, Julie even has a chance to move back with her father when he remarries. However, she decides to stay with Aunt Cordelia because she feels so attached to her.
Growing Up and Learning Lessons
The story covers ten years of Julie's life, from when she is seven until she graduates from high school at seventeen. It shows many normal things that happen as a child grows up. These include dealing with difficult moments with other children, feeling jealous, having challenges with schoolwork, and experiencing first love. Julie also learns about the different challenges and experiences that adults face in their lives.
