Upper All's Well Cave is found in Gibraltar, a small but very important piece of land. This area is known as a British Overseas Territory. This means it is part of the United Kingdom, but it is located overseas. The cave itself is made from Limestone, a common type of rock.
A Historic Lookout Point
Long ago, soldiers on guard duty used this cave as a perfect place to watch for anything unusual. From this hidden spot, they could see far and wide. It was a very important position for keeping the area safe. The cave's location, near Prince's Lines, made it easy for soldiers to get to.
The "All's Well" Tradition
The cave gets its unique name from a special tradition. Every 15 minutes, a soldier on guard inside the cave would shout down to the next soldier below. They would call out, "All's Well!" This message was then passed along from one soldier to the next. The shouts would travel all the way down to Grand Casemates Square. Today, there is even a pub called "All's Well" in that square, named after this old tradition. This system helped make sure everyone knew that everything was safe and calm.
