Urdish facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Urdish (also called Urglish) is a special way of speaking in Pakistan. It mixes two languages: Urdu and English. Think of it like blending two words to make a new one, like "brunch" (breakfast + lunch). Urdish is when people switch back and forth between Urdu and English words or phrases, even within the same sentence.

This way of speaking is common among people in Pakistan who know both Urdu and English. They might use Urdish in certain places or with certain groups of friends.

What is Urdish?

Urdish is a mix of Urdu and English. It's like having a conversation where you use words from both languages easily. This is called "code-switching." It means you switch between languages without really thinking about it.

When Did Urdish Start?

The word Urdish was first written down in 1989. Other similar names for this language mix appeared later. For example, Urglish was recorded in 1995. Urdlish came in 1997, and Urduish in 1998. These are all informal names for the same language blend.

Urdish in Education

On August 14, 2015, the Government of Pakistan started a program called Ilm Pakistan. "Ilm" means knowledge. This program aimed to create a new school curriculum using Urdish.

Why a New Curriculum?

Ahsan Iqbal, who was a Federal Minister in Pakistan, explained the idea. He said the government wanted to create a new way of teaching students. This new way would combine both Urdu and English. They decided to call this new teaching style "Urdish." The goal was to make learning easier and more natural for students who use both languages every day.
