Uvedale Tomkins Price (born September 17, 1685 – died March 17, 1764) was a British politician. He lived at Poston Lodge and Foxley in Herefordshire, England. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons between 1713 and 1734. He started as a Tory and later became a Whig. These were two main political groups in Britain at that time.

Early Life

Uvedale Price was the younger son of Robert Price, who was a judge. His mother was Lucy Rodd. He was named after his mother's uncle, Uvedale Tomkins. He went to Charterhouse School and St Paul's School. After that, he studied at St John's College, Cambridge University. He also studied law at Lincoln's Inn. From 1709 to 1712, he traveled in France and Italy. In 1714, he married Anne Somerset. She was the daughter of Lord Arthur Somerset.

Political Journey

Uvedale's older brother, Thomas, was also an MP for Weobley. But Thomas passed away young in 1706. So, Uvedale Price became the MP for Weobley in 1713. He was a Tory at this time and supported the government. He did not run for election in 1715.

After a break, he was elected again as MP for Weobley in 1727. This time, he was a Whig. He usually voted with the government. However, he did vote against them once in 1730, regarding Hessian troops. He wasn't very keen on his political career. He decided not to run for election in 1734. His father passed away in 1733, and his wife Anne died in 1741.

Family and Legacy

Uvedale Price passed away on March 17, 1764. He was buried in Bath Abbey. He and his wife Anne had three daughters who passed away young. They also had one son, Robert Price (1717–1761). Robert had seven sons with his wife. Uvedale Price's grandson, also named Uvedale Price, later inherited the family home at Foxley. This grandson became a famous writer about art and landscapes.
