Vícam is a town located in the Mexican state of Sonora. It is a very important place for the Yaqui people, who are an indigenous group. The Yaqui have lived in this area for a long time. Some Yaqui people also live in the United States, especially in the state of Arizona.
History of Vícam and the Yaqui People
Vícam was one of eight special villages where the Yaqui people settled. This happened in the early 1600s. Spanish Jesuit missionaries helped them settle in these places. Other villages included Pótam, Tórim, Bácum, Cócorit, Huiribis, Benem, and Rahum.
Today, Vícam is one of the biggest towns in the Guaymas area. It remains a main home for the Yaqui people. The town also hosted an important event called the Meeting of the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas. This meeting took place from October 11 to 14, 2007.
Location and Population of Vícam
Vícam is found at the southern end of the Guaymas region. It is about 10 meters (33 feet) above sea level. A major road, Federal Highway 15, connects Vícam to other cities. To the north, it links to Guaymas and Hermosillo. To the south, it connects to Ciudad Obregón and Navojoa.
In 2005, a study by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography counted the people in Vícam. The total population was 8,578. This included 4,207 men and 4,371 women.
