Vũ Quang National Park is a special nature area in Vietnam. It's located in the Vũ Quang District of Hà Tĩnh Province, in the North Central Coast region. This park is full of amazing plants and animals, which is called 'biodiversity'. You can find rare animals here, like the Saola and the Giant muntjac.

Vũ Quang is a faraway forest area in Vietnam. Since the 1990s, scientists have found several new kinds of deer and antelope here. Some of these animals are so new that they don't even have official scientific names yet! But local people already have names for most of them.

This special area was first protected as a forest reserve in 1986. Then, in 2002, it officially became a National Park. The park covers a large area of about 212 square miles (550 square kilometers).

Discovering New Animals

Vũ Quang National Park is famous for being a place where many new animal species have been found. It's like a hidden treasure chest of wildlife!

Amazing Mammals

Here are some of the exciting new animals discovered in Vũ Quang and nearby areas:

  • Saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis): This animal is also known as the Vu Quang ox. It looks a bit like an antelope and is very rare.
  • Quang khem: People call this the "slow deer."
  • Giant muntjac (Megamuntiacus vuquangensis): This is the biggest kind of muntjac deer in the world!
  • Mangden: This name means "black deer."
  • Linh dương (Pseudonovibos spiralis): This name means "holy goat." A similar animal has also been seen in Cambodia, where it's called kting voar.

Unique Fish Species

Besides mammals, Vũ Quang is also home to five new kinds of fish:

  • Parazacco vuquangensis
  • Crosscheilus vuha
  • Pararhoedus philanthropus
  • Pararhoedus equalitus
  • Oreoglanis libertus

More Mysterious Animals

Scientists have also had glimpses of other possible new animals in this region:

  • A black muntjac was spotted in Laos in 1994.
  • A skull and some meat from the Vietnamese warty pig (Sus bucculensis) were found. This pig was first described in 1892, but for a long time, no one had any real proof it existed!
