About V. S. Subrahmanya Iyer
Early Life and Start of Career
V. S. Subrahmanya Iyer was born on October 21, 1877. His father was S. Vaidyanatha Iyer. He went to college at St. Joseph's College. After his studies, he became a lawyer in Travancore. Before becoming Diwan, he was the Chief Justice of the High Court of Travancore. This means he was the main judge in the highest court there.
Serving as Diwan of Travancore
Subrahmanya Iyer became the Diwan of Travancore in 1929. He took over from E. W. Watts. He worked as Diwan until 1932. After him, Thomas Austin became the Diwan.
During his time as Diwan, some important things happened:
- In 1930, Venkatarama Iyer was made the Commissioner of Travancore Devaswom. This role was about managing religious institutions.
- In 1931, students in Travancore held a hartal. A hartal is a type of strike where people stop working or going to school to protest. This happened after the death of Motilal Nehru, a famous Indian leader.
Life After Being Diwan
Even after he stopped being Diwan, Subrahmanya Iyer stayed active in public life.
- On November 25, 1932, Sir C. P. Ramaswami Iyer asked him to lead a special committee. This committee's job was to find out what people thought about allowing everyone into temples. This was a very important topic at the time.
- Other members of this committee included Ulloor Parameswara Iyer. The committee talked to many people. They spoke with those who wanted everyone to enter temples and those who did not.
- The committee wrote a report saying that temple entry should not happen. However, Sir C. P. Ramaswami Iyer decided to go ahead with the plan anyway. This led to a big change called the Temple Entry Proclamation.
In 1934, Subrahmanya Iyer became the president of the Kerala Hindu Mission. This group worked for Hindu causes. Later, when the famous poet Rabindranath Tagore died in 1941, an organization called the Kerala Tagore Academy was started. Subrahmanya Iyer became its president.
