v2food is an Australian company that makes plant-based meat. This means they create food that looks and tastes like meat but is made from plants. They use proteins from plants called legumes. v2food is a team-up between Jack Cowin's Competitive Foods Australia and CSIRO's investment group, Main Sequence Ventures.
How v2food Started
v2food began in January 2019. It was created by a partnership. This partnership was between Jack Cowin's company, Competitive Foods, and CSIRO's investment fund. CSIRO is a big science organization in Australia.
Jack Cowin's company also owns Hungry Jack's. Hungry Jack's is a popular fast-food chain in Australia. It is like Burger King in other parts of the world. CSIRO agreed to do research for v2food. In return, they got a share in the company. Nick Hazell is the person who started v2food. He is also the CEO, which means he leads the company.
Where v2food Makes Its Products
Competitive Foods has a factory in Brisbane, Australia. In 2019, there were plans for a new factory. This factory was going to be built in Wodonga. It would help make more v2food products.
The Wodonga factory opened in December 2020. However, it closed down in 2023. This happened because the company faced some challenges. v2food wants to sell its products in China and other parts of Asia too.
What Products v2food Makes
v2food makes different kinds of plant-based meat. Their first product was a burger patty. Hungry Jack's launched this patty in October 2019. They called it the "Rebel Whopper." It was a meat-free version of their famous Whopper burger.
You could also find v2food's burger patties at other places. These included Soul Burger and Burger Urge restaurants. Burger King restaurants in New Zealand started using them in January 2020. Later in 2020, Burger King in the Philippines and Japan also launched a "Plant-Based Whopper" with v2food's patties.
In April 2020, v2food's plant-based mince became available. You could get it in meal kits from Marley Spoon. Later that year, their mince and burger patties were sold in big supermarkets. These included Woolworths and Coles. In 2021, v2food also released a plant-based sausage product.
