v2food is an Australian company that makes plant-based foods. These foods are designed to look and taste like meat, but they are made from plants. The company was started by a partnership between Jack Cowin's company, Competitive Foods Australia, and CSIRO's investment fund, Main Sequence Ventures. CSIRO is a big science organization in Australia.
v2food creates its plant-based products using protein taken from legumes, like peas or beans. This helps them make tasty alternatives to traditional meat.
How v2food Started
v2food began in January 2019. It was a joint effort between Jack Cowin's Competitive Foods and CSIRO's investment group, Main Sequence Ventures. Jack Cowin also owns Hungry Jack's, which is the Australian version of Burger King.
CSIRO agreed to do research for v2food. In return, they received a share of the company. Nick Hazell is the person who founded v2food, and he is also its CEO.
Competitive Foods already had a factory in Brisbane. In 2019, there were plans to build a new factory in Wodonga to help make v2food products. This new factory opened in December 2020. However, in 2023, the factory had to close because of difficulties in the market.
The company hopes to sell its products in China and other parts of Asia in the future.
What Products v2food Makes
Hungry Jack's was the first to sell a v2food product in October 2019. It was called the "Rebel Whopper." This burger was a meat-free version of their famous Whopper burger.
Later, v2food's burger patties became available at other restaurants like Soul Burger and Burger Urge. They also started selling in New Zealand Burger King restaurants in January 2020. In late 2020, Burger King launched the "Plant-Based Whopper" in the Philippines and Japan, also using v2food's patties.
In April 2020, v2food's plant-based mince (like ground meat) became available. You could find it in meal kits from Marley Spoon. Later that year, their mince and burger patties were sold in big supermarkets like Woolworths and Coles. In 2021, v2food also released a plant-based sausage product.
