M.K. Gopinathan Nair, known to many as Vaisakhan, is a famous Indian writer. He writes short stories, plays, and movie scripts. His stories are loved for being simple and having fresh ideas. Many of his tales are set against the exciting background of the Indian Railways.

Vaisakhan was the President of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi until 2022. Since February 2025, he has been the Chairman of the Tirur Thunchan Smaraka Trust. He took over this role from the late M.T. Vasudevan Nair, who had been Chairman for 32 years.

Early Life and Career

Vaisakhan was born in 1940 in Muvattupuzha. His birth name was Gopinathan. His parents were A.V. Krishna Kurup and Narayani Amma.

He studied at several colleges, including Maharaja's College, Ernakulam, Nirmala College, and St. Albert's College.

In 1964, Vaisakhan started working for the Southern Railway (India). He was a station master. After 20 years, he decided to leave his job early. He wanted to focus completely on his writing.

Vaisakhan was married to Padma, who passed away in 1998. They had three children: Praveen, Pradeep, and Poornima. Today, he lives in Raghavapuram, near Chittur, in Palakkad.

Vaisakhan's most famous work is a story called Noolpalam Kadakkunnavar. This story has won many awards and is highly praised.
