Valentin Conrart (born 1603 – died September 23, 1675) was a French writer. He helped create the Académie française, which is a very important group in France that looks after the French language. He was the first person to hold "seat 2" in this group.

Valentin Conrart's Life Story

Valentin Conrart was born in Paris, France. His parents followed the Calvinist faith. He was first trained to work in business. However, after his father passed away in 1620, Valentin started spending time with people who loved books and writing.

He soon became well-known, even though he didn't publish much for many years. He became an important helper and secretary to the king. In 1629, a group of writers and thinkers started meeting at his house. They would talk about books and ideas. They also read and gave feedback on each other's writings.

Cardinal Richelieu, a very powerful person at the time, offered to protect this group. This led to the creation of the Académie française in 1635. The first meetings of this new academy were held right in Conrart's home! Everyone in the group chose him to be their secretary. He did this important job for 43 years, until he died.

Valentin Conrart's Writings

The most important book Valentin Conrart wrote is called Mémoires sur l'histoire de son temps. This title means "Memories about the history of his time." It's like a diary or a collection of his thoughts and observations about the events and people of his era. This book was published by Louis Monmerqué in 1825, long after Conrart had passed away.
