The Vancouver and District Waterfront Workers' Association (VDWWA) was a special kind of group called a union. It represented longshoremen, who are workers who load and unload ships, in Vancouver, Canada. This union existed from 1923 to 1935.

What Was the VDWWA?

The VDWWA was created in 1923. It was set up by a group called the Shipping Federation of British Columbia. This happened after a big strike by another union, the International Longshoremen's Association, failed. The Shipping Federation wanted a union that they could control more easily. This type of union is sometimes called a company union.

How Did the Union Change?

In 1933, some people who wanted big changes were chosen to lead the VDWWA. These leaders were connected to a group called the Communist Party of Canada. They also worked with another group called the Workers' Unity League. Because of these new leaders, the VDWWA became a much stronger and more active union. They started to fight harder for the rights of the longshoremen.

The End of the VDWWA

The VDWWA itself faced a big challenge in 1935. There was another major strike by the waterfront workers in Vancouver. After this strike, the VDWWA was defeated and stopped existing.
