Vasyl Pavlovych Komisarenko (born January 1, 1907, died April 7, 1993) was an important Ukrainian scientist. He was a doctor who studied hormones and how diseases affect the body. He was a member of Ukraine's top science academies. Vasyl Komisarenko also helped start and lead the Institute of Endocrinology and Metabolism. This institute studies hormones and related health issues.

Early Life and Education

Vasyl Komisarenko was born on January 14, 1907, in a village called Chernyakhiv. This village is now part of the Kyiv region. He first went to the Kyiv Medical School. After that, in 1928, he started studying at the Kharkiv Medical Institute.

After finishing his studies in 1932, he joined a special program. This program was at the Ukrainian Organ Therapeutic Institute in Kharkiv. In 1935, he finished his advanced research and became a senior researcher there. Just two years later, he became the director of the institute.

Contributions to Science

In 1940, Vasyl Komisarenko moved to Kyiv. A famous scientist, Oleksandr Bogomolets, invited him. For 25 years, Vasyl Pavlovych led a special lab. This lab studied endocrinology, which is the study of hormones. This lab was part of the Institute of Experimental Biology and Pathology. Later, it became part of the Bogomolets Institute of Physiology.

In 1941, Komisarenko earned his highest science degree. He also wrote a book about how insulin shock happens. He wrote more than 300 scientific papers. He also wrote ten big books on science. He helped train many new scientists. He guided 25 doctors and 45 other researchers.

Vasyl Komisarenko focused on how hormones work in the body. Hormones are like messengers that control many body functions. He looked at how hormones affect both healthy bodies and bodies with diseases. He is known for starting the Ukrainian school of endocrinologists. This means he trained many experts in the field of hormones in Ukraine.

  • Adrenal cortex hormones and their role in physiological and pathological processes of the body (1956).
  • Splenin (1961).
  • Inhibitors of adrenal cortex function (1972).
  • Molecular mechanisms of action of steroid hormones (1986).

Remembering Vasyl Komisarenko

To honor Vasyl Komisarenko, the Institute of Endocrinology and Metabolism was named after him. This is the institute he helped create and lead. You can find a special plaque on the building at 69 Vyshhorodska Street in Kyiv. It reminds everyone of his important work.
