Vee Guthrie (born July 27, 1920 – died July 6, 2012) was an American artist. She was famous for drawing pictures for children's books and cookbooks.

Vee Guthrie was born Viola May Guthrie on July 27, 1920. Her hometown was Fort Smith, Arkansas. She grew up in Long Island, New York.

Her Education and Early Work

Vee went to college at The Women's College of Middlebury. She graduated in 1942 with a degree in American literature. She also loved art and studied at the Art Students League of New York.

During World War II, Vee helped with the war effort. In 1944, she worked at Grumman Aircraft in Long Island, helping with engineering. She also joined the WAVES, which was a special part of the U.S. Navy for women. She worked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard until 1946. After the war, she used the GI Bill to study at the Rhode Island School of Design, a famous art school.

Vee Guthrie's Art Career

Vee Guthrie became a talented illustrator. She drew pictures for many books, especially for young readers.

Illustrating Children's Books

In 1957, Vee illustrated a book called Let's Go to The Library. It was written by Naomi Buchheimer. She also drew pictures for another book in the same series, Let's Take a Trip to a Firehouse. These books were made to help schools when they took field trips to places like libraries and firehouses.

Vee also worked with her sister, Barbara Guthrie McDonald. She illustrated Barbara's children's book, Cooking Fun (1960). Later, she illustrated another cookbook by her sister, called Casserole Cooking Fun.

She drew for many other children's books too. Some of these include Golly and the Gulls (1962) and A Sight of Everything (1963). Vee also created pictures for Child Life Magazine, arithmetic books, song books, and holiday cookbooks. She made special holiday cookbooks for the Peter Pauper Press.

Awards for Her Work

In 1964, a book Vee illustrated won an important award. The book was called The High Pasture, written by Ruth P. Harnden. It won the Children’s Book Committee Award from Bank Street College. This award recognized great books for children.

Later Life

In 1969, Vee Guthrie worked as a first grade teacher in Claverack, New York. She lived with author Ruth Harnden in Plymouth, Massachusetts, near a place called the Billington Sea. Vee Guthrie passed away on July 6, 2012.
