Velmanette Montgomery (born December 22, 1942) is an American politician from the Democratic Party. She served as a State Senator for New York from 1984 until 2020. She represented the 25th district of the New York State Senate. This district included many neighborhoods in Brooklyn, such as Fort Greene, Boerum Hill, Red Hook, and Park Slope.

Early Life and Education
Velmanette Montgomery was born in Houston, Texas. She later moved to New York City to continue her education. She earned a special degree in education from New York University. Later, she also studied at Columbia University as a special scholar.
Before Becoming a Senator
Before she was elected to public office, Montgomery worked in education. She was a teacher and a part-time professor. She also directed a day care center. She helped start a group called the Day Care Forum of New York City. This group worked to improve day care services. She also served as the leader of a local school board, Community School Board 13. In 1991, she received a special honorary degree from St. Joseph's College.
Serving in the New York Senate
Montgomery was first elected as a State Senator in 1984. She took over from Anna V. Jefferson, who did not run for re-election. Velmanette Montgomery was re-elected seventeen times during her career. She was a very popular senator and never lost an election.
Key Roles and Laws
In the Senate, Montgomery led the Committee on Children and Families. This committee works on laws that help children and families in New York. She was a strong supporter of women's health choices. She also supported nurse practitioners, who are advanced nurses. She helped create laws to improve public health and prevent discrimination.
In 2019, her fellow senators chose her to be the Majority Conference Secretary. This was an important leadership role.
Retirement from the Senate
On January 11, 2020, Velmanette Montgomery announced her retirement. She decided not to run for re-election that year. She had served the people of New York for many years. She supported Assemblywoman Tremaine Wright to take her place.
