Velmanette Montgomery (born December 22, 1942) is an American politician. She was a member of the Democratic Party. She served in the New York State Senate from 1984 to 2020. She represented the 25th district. This district covers many neighborhoods in Brooklyn, New York. Some of these areas include Fort Greene, Red Hook, and Park Slope.

Early Life and Education

Velmanette Montgomery was born in Houston, Texas. She later moved to New York City. There, she earned a master's degree in education from New York University. This advanced degree helped her in her career.

Before Politics

Before becoming a politician, Montgomery worked in education. She was a teacher and also taught at a university as an adjunct professor. An adjunct professor is someone who teaches part-time. She also directed a day care center. She helped start the Day Care Forum of New York City. This group worked to improve child care. She also led Community School Board 13.

In 1991, she received a special honor. St. Joseph's College gave her an Honorary Doctor of Laws. This is a degree given to someone to honor their achievements.

Serving in the New York Senate

Velmanette Montgomery was first elected to the New York State Senate in 1984. She took over from Anna V. Jefferson. She was re-elected many times, seventeen in total. This means she served for a long time. She never lost an election.
