Vera Myller, a brilliant mathematician

Vera Myller-Lebedev was a very smart Russian mathematician. She was born on December 1, 1880, and passed away on December 12, 1970. Vera made history by becoming the first woman to be a university professor in Romania! She also earned her highest degree, called a doctorate, in Germany, where she studied with a famous mathematician named David Hilbert.

Vera's Early School Days

Vera Lebedev was born in a city called Saint Petersburg in Russia. She went to school in Novgorod. From 1897 to 1902, she attended special classes in Saint Petersburg called the Bestuzhev Courses.

After that, Vera traveled to Germany to study at the University of Göttingen. In 1906, she earned her doctorate there. A doctorate is a very high university degree that shows you are an expert in your field. Her main teacher for this was the famous mathematician David Hilbert. Vera's big research paper for her doctorate was about something called "integral equations," which are a type of math problem.

Marriage and Becoming a Professor

While she was studying in Göttingen, Vera met another mathematician named Alexandru Myller, who was from Romania. They got married in 1907.

After they were married, Vera and Alexandru moved to Romania. In 1910, Vera joined the math department at the University of Iași. She worked very hard, and in 1918, she was promoted to a full professor. This was a huge achievement because it made her Romania's first female university professor!

Vera Myller-Lebedev lived in Iași, Romania, until she passed away in 1970. She is buried in the city's Eternitatea Cemetery.

Vera's Math Books

Vera Myller-Lebedev also wrote important math textbooks in Romanian. In 1942, she wrote a book about algebra, which is a part of math that uses letters and symbols to represent numbers. Then, in 1945, she wrote another book about how algebra is used with something called "group theory."

Her algebra textbook was so good that she won the Romanian State Prize in 1953! This award showed how much her work helped students and the field of mathematics in Romania.
