The Verona Apartments is an apartment building located in the Cass Corridor area of Detroit, Michigan. This historic building is special because it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important place with a lot of history! The building actually has three parts: a central section and two wings on the east and west sides. Today, the Verona Apartments are managed by Cass and Ferry Apartments.
A Look Back in Time
The Verona Apartments were built a long time ago, in 1896. A company from Detroit called Malcomson and Higginbotham designed them. When the building first opened, it had 16 very large, fancy apartments, often called "luxury suites."
Later, around the 1930s, it became easier for people to buy their own homes. This meant fewer people wanted to rent these big, expensive apartments. So, in 1945, the building was changed. The 16 large apartments were divided into 26 smaller ones. This made them more affordable and fit what people needed at the time.
Building Style
The Verona Apartments have a unique look. The building has a tall, five-story section in the middle. On each side of this central part, there are shorter, three-story sections, like wings.
The very bottom of the building is made of stone. The rest of the building is made of brick. It was originally orange, but now it's painted gray. The main entrance has a rounded archway, which is a cool design feature. You can also see the building's name, "Verona," built right into the arch above the door.
The building has many decorative touches. For example, there are special designs above the first-floor windows. There are also curved parts next to the entrance and fancy patterns above the first and fifth floors. These details make the Verona Apartments stand out!
