Building and Naming the Bridge

The bridge was finished in 1991. It cost about $20 million to build. This project helped complete the Interstate 90 highway east of Coeur d'Alene.

When it was first built, the bridge was called the Bennett Bay Centennial Bridge. This name celebrated Idaho's 100th birthday as a state. In 1992, the bridge's name was changed. It became the Veterans Memorial Centennial Bridge. This new name honors all of Idaho's war veterans.

How the Bridge Was Built

The Veterans Memorial Centennial Bridge is a special type of concrete bridge. It is made from many concrete sections joined together. The bridge is 527 meters (1,730 feet) long. It is also 21.3 meters (70 feet) wide.

The bridge carries four lanes of traffic. It stands high above the valley floor. The distance from the bridge to the valley below is about 91 meters (300 feet).
