Vi Hart's Amazing Career
Vi Hart started their career as a math popularizer in 2010. They made a video series about "doodling in math class." These videos were about recreational mathematics, which is math done for fun. They introduced ideas like fractal dimension, which describes how complex shapes can be.
These videos quickly became very popular. Vi Hart was even featured in The New York Times and on National Public Radio. Later, they received support from the Khan Academy. They made videos for Khan Academy as their "Resident Mathemusician."
Many of Vi Hart's videos mix math and music. One famous video is "Twelve tones." The website Salon called this video "deliriously and delightfully profound."
Exploring Virtual Reality
In 2014, Vi Hart, Emily Eifler, and Andrea Hawksley started a research group. They named it eleVR. This group focused on studying virtual reality (VR).
The eleVR group created VR videos. They also worked together on educational computer games. One game they made was called Hypernom. In this game, players had to "eat" parts of 4-dimensional shapes. These shapes were shown in 3D using a virtual reality headset.
In June 2014, eleVR released an open source web video player. This player worked with the Oculus Rift VR headset. That same year, Vi Hart also created a playable blog post called Parable of the Polygons with Nicky Case. This game was based on an idea from economist Thomas Schelling about how groups of people can separate.
In May 2016, eleVR joined Y Combinator Research (YCR). This was part of a project called the Human Advancement Research Community (HARC). Vi Hart was listed as a main researcher for this project.
