Victoria "Vi" Hart is an American mathematician and a former YouTube creator. Born in 1988, she is known for making fun and interesting videos about math and music. Vi Hart calls herself a "recreational mathemusician" because she loves to explore math in creative ways.
She helped start a research group called eleVR, which focused on virtual reality. Vi Hart has also written several research papers about computational geometry and the math behind paper folding.
In 2018, Vi Hart and another math popularizer, Matt Parker, won an award for their "entertaining, thought-provoking mathematics and music videos on YouTube." This award recognized how well they explained math ideas through their creative videos.

Vi Hart's Career in Mathematics
Vi Hart started her journey as a math popularizer in 2010. She created a video series called "doodling in math class." These videos explored fun math topics like fractal dimensions, which are ways to measure how "rough" or "complex" shapes are.
Her videos quickly became popular. She was even featured in The New York Times and on National Public Radio. Later, she received support from Khan Academy, an online learning platform. She made videos for them as their "Resident Mathemusician."
Many of Vi Hart's videos mix math with music. For example, her video Twelve Tones was praised for being very deep and delightful.
Research and Virtual Reality
In 2014, Vi Hart, along with M Eilo and Andrea Hawksley, created a research group called eleVR. Their goal was to explore virtual reality (VR). VR lets you experience a computer-generated world as if you were really there.
The group made VR videos and worked on educational computer games. One game they created was called Hypernom. In this game, players explored parts of 4-dimensional shapes that were shown in 3D using a virtual reality headset.
In June 2014, eleVR also released an open source web video player. This player worked with the Oculus Rift, a popular VR headset. That same year, Vi Hart also created an interactive blog post called Parable of the Polygons with Nicky Case. This game was based on ideas from economist Thomas Schelling about how groups of people might separate.
In May 2016, eleVR joined Y Combinator Research (YCR). This was part of a project called the Human Advancement Research Community (HARC). Vi Hart was a main researcher in this project.
Work at Microsoft
Vi Hart is a Senior Research Project Manager at Microsoft. As of 2021, she was a Director of Policy and Strategy in the Societal Resilience Group at Microsoft Research. This group works on how technology can help society be stronger and more prepared for challenges.
YouTube Channel Closure
In 2025, Vi Hart decided to delete her YouTube channel and all her videos. She explained on her Patreon page that she was not happy with YouTube's rules and how it treated creators.
Vi Hart stated that she did not plan to return to YouTube. However, her videos are still available on Vimeo, another video-sharing platform. When her channel was deleted, it had about 1.5 million subscribers.
Personal Life
Vi Hart is the child of George W. Hart, who is a famous mathematical sculptor. She studied music at Stony Brook University.
