The Vice-Prime Minister of Mauritius (also called Vice-Premier ministre in French) is a special title given to up to two ministers in the Government of Mauritius. It's an honorary title, which means it's a recognition of their importance, but it's not a separate job created by the country's main law, the Constitution of Mauritius.
Currently, no one holds this title. The Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, has chosen not to appoint anyone to this role for now. The last people to hold this title were Leela Devi Dookhun and Anwar Husnoo. They were appointed on November 12, 2019.
What is a Vice-Prime Minister?
In 2005, Dr. Navin Ramgoolam, who was the Prime Minister at the time, suggested creating official positions for two Vice-Prime Ministers. However, the National Assembly of Mauritius (which is like the country's parliament) voted against this idea. This was because the Constitution already has a job called Deputy Prime Minister of Mauritius.
The National Assembly decided that while these ministers wouldn't have a new official job, two important cabinet members could still be known as Vice-Prime Minister (VPM). Since no new official job was created, the VPM title is mostly for honor and respect. This means that if the Prime Minister is away, sick, or can't do their job, it's the Deputy Prime Minister who steps in as the acting Prime Minister, not a Vice-Prime Minister.
