His father, Anerood Jugnauth, was a former President and Prime Minister of Mauritius. His mother, Sarojini Ballah, was a schoolteacher. He has an older sister named Shalini.
He attended Aryan Vedic for primary school. Later, he studied at Royal College Curepipe. He then went on to study law at the University of Buckingham and became a barrister. He also earned a diploma in law from Aix-Marseille University in France.
Family Life
Pravind Jugnauth married Kobita Ramdanee in 1992. They have three daughters named Sonika, Sonali, and Sara.
Political Journey
Pravind Jugnauth began his political career in 1987. He officially joined the MSM party in 1990.
Serving as Minister (2000–2005)

From 2000 to 2003, Jugnauth served as the Minister of Agriculture. During this time, he worked to modernize the sugar industry in Mauritius. He helped introduce new ways to use sugar cane, like making ethanol and electricity. He also worked to lower production costs for sugar farmers.
He also helped create a plan for sugar workers to retire with financial support. This plan helped about 8,000 workers. Jugnauth also supported modern farming methods like hydroponics. He set up a National Agricultural Biotechnology Institute to help with research. He also started the Small Planters Welfare Fund to help farmers and their families, offering crop insurance.
From 2003 to 2005, Jugnauth was the Minister of Finance. He reduced taxes on many goods and increased support for basic items. He also worked on a project to make Mauritius a Duty Free Island, which means many goods could be bought without extra taxes.
Time in Opposition (2005–2009)
In 2005, there was a general election in Mauritius. The Labour-led Alliance Sociale won more seats than the MSM-MMM alliance. Pravind Jugnauth did not win his seat in this election.
Even though he was not an elected member of Parliament, Pravind Jugnauth remained the leader of the MSM party.
Return to Parliament (2009–2017)
In 2009, a special election was held in the Quartier Militaire and Moka area. Pravind Jugnauth ran and won this election. This victory helped pave the way for a new alliance between the Labour Party and the MSM.
In 2009, the MSM joined with the Mauritian Labour Party and the Mauritian Social Democrat Party to form a group called Alliance de L'Avenir. This group won the 2010 Mauritian general election. On 11 May 2010, Pravind Jugnauth was appointed Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. However, he and other MSM ministers resigned in July 2011.
In 2014, Pravind Jugnauth became the Leader of the Opposition. He held this role from September to December 2014. After his political group, Alliance Lepep, won the election, he was appointed Minister of Information Technology.
Becoming Prime Minister (2017–2024)
On 23 January 2017, Pravind Jugnauth was chosen by his party, the MSM, to lead the National Assembly. This led to another political party leaving the government and joining the opposition. Pravind Jugnauth served as Prime Minister for the rest of that government's term, which ended with the 2019 Mauritian general election.
After his new political group, the Alliance Morisien, won the 2019 Mauritian general election, Pravind Jugnauth was elected as Prime Minister for a five-year term.
During his time as Prime Minister, there was an important discussion about the Chagos Archipelago. These islands in the Indian Ocean were claimed by both the United Kingdom and Mauritius. In 2019, the International Court of Justice said that the United Kingdom should give the islands back to Mauritius.
In October 2024, an agreement was reached between the UK and Mauritius. Most of the Chagos Archipelago will be returned to Mauritius. However, the island of Diego Garcia will remain under the control of the UK and USA for at least 99 years.
Pravind Jugnauth's government lost the 2024 Mauritian general election.
Awards and Recognition

In 2005, Pravind Jugnauth received an honorary doctorate from the University of Buckingham. In 2017, he was given the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award by the President of India.
