Pravind Kumar Jugnauth (born 25 December 1961) is a well-known politician from Mauritius. He served as the Prime Minister of the country. He first became Prime Minister in 2017, taking over from his father, Anerood Jugnauth. He led the government until 2019. He was then elected Prime Minister again in 2019 after his political group, L'Alliance Morisien, won the elections. He continued in this role until 2024.

Early Life and Education

Pravind Jugnauth was born on 25 December 1961. His birthplace was La Caverne, a part of Vacoas-Phoenix in Mauritius. He grew up in a Hindu family. His father, Anerood Jugnauth, was a former President and Prime Minister of Mauritius. His mother, Sarojini Ballah, worked as a schoolteacher. He also has an older sister named Shalini.

Pravind Jugnauth attended Aryan Vedic for his primary education. Later, he studied at Royal College Curepipe. He then went to the University of Buckingham to study law. He became a barrister, which is a type of lawyer. He also earned a diploma in civil law from Aix-Marseille University in France.

Family Life

Pravind Jugnauth married Kobita Ramdanee in 1992. They have three daughters together. Their names are Sonika, Sonali, and Sara.

Start of Political Career

Pravind Jugnauth began his journey in politics in 1987. He officially joined the MSM party in 1990.

Political Roles (2000-2005)

From 2000 to 2003, Pravind Jugnauth served as the Minister of Agriculture. During this time, he worked to improve the sugar industry. He helped it produce new things like ethanol and special sugars. He also focused on making electricity from bagasse, which is a leftover from sugar cane. These changes helped reduce costs as sugar prices dropped.

He also helped sugar workers by creating a retirement plan. This plan allowed many workers to retire with money and land. Jugnauth also supported modern farming methods like hydroponics. He set up a National Agricultural Biotechnology Institute to help with research. He also started the Small Planters Welfare Fund. This fund helps farmers and their families. It provides insurance if their crops are damaged by bad weather.

From 2003 to 2005, he was the Finance Minister. In this role, he lowered taxes on many goods. He also increased support for basic items. He worked on a plan to make Mauritius a Duty Free Island. This would mean fewer taxes on imported goods.

Political Roles (2005-2009)

In 2005, the Parliament was dissolved for new elections. Pravind Jugnauth's party, the MSM, lost the election. He was not elected as a Member of Parliament at that time. Even though he was not in Parliament, he remained the leader of the MSM party.

In 2009, a special election was held. Pravind Jugnauth ran as a candidate. He won this election, which helped his party form a new alliance with the Labour Party.

Political Roles (2009-2014)

In 2009, the MSM party formed a group called Alliance de L'Avenir. This group included the Mauritian Labour Party. They won the elections in May 2010. Pravind Jugnauth was then appointed as the Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. He served in these roles until July 2011.

In 2014, Pravind Jugnauth became the Leader of the Opposition. This means he led the main political party that was not in power. He held this position from September to December 2014.

Political Roles (2014-2017)

After his political group, Alliance Lepep, won the elections, he was appointed as the Minister of Information Technology.

Prime Minister (2017-2019)

On 23 January 2017, Pravind Jugnauth was chosen by his party to lead the government. He became the Prime Minister of Mauritius. His time as Prime Minister lasted until the general elections in November 2019.

Prime Minister (2019-2024)

After his political group, Alliance Morisien, won the 2019 General Elections, Pravind Jugnauth was elected Prime Minister for another five-year term.

During his time as Prime Minister, he worked on an important issue. This was the ownership of the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean. The United Kingdom and Mauritius both claimed these islands. In 2019, the International Court of Justice said the islands should be returned to Mauritius.

Pravind Jugnauth worked to get the islands back. In October 2024, an agreement was reached between the UK and Mauritius. Most of the islands will be given to Mauritius. However, the island of Diego Garcia will remain under the control of the UK and USA for a long time.

Pravind Jugnauth's government did not win the 2024 Mauritian general election.

Recognition and Awards

In 2005, Pravind Jugnauth received an honorary doctorate from the University of Buckingham. An honorary doctorate is a special degree given to someone for their achievements. In 2017, he was given the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award by the President of India. This award honors people of Indian origin for their contributions.
