Prithvirajsing (Pradeep) Roopun is a Mauritian politician. He served as the seventh President of Mauritius from 2019 to 2024. He was born on May 24, 1959.

Early Life and Education
Prithvirajsing Roopun grew up in Quatre Bornes, Mauritius. He comes from a family of Indian heritage. He went to New Eton College for high school. After that, he worked as a mathematics teacher.
He later studied law and became an attorney in 1986. An attorney is a lawyer who can represent people in court. He also earned a master's degree in international business law. For over 15 years, he was part of the board that examines legal students. He also taught law at the University of Mauritius.
Family Life
Prithvirajsing Roopun is married to Sayukta Roopun. They have four daughters named Divya, Jyotsna, Adishta, and Vedisha.
Political Career
Roopun started his political journey in 1983. He first ran for election in 1995. In the 2000 general election, he was elected to represent the Savanne and Black River area. He served in the Legislative Assembly, which is like the country's parliament. From 2000 to 2004, he was the deputy chief government whip. This role helps make sure party members vote together.
In 2005, he became the Minister of Local Government and Solid Waste Management. This job involved managing local councils and waste disposal.
Serving in Parliament
In 2010, Roopun was elected again, this time for the Flacq and Bon Accueil area. He served as the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly from 2010 to 2012. The Deputy Speaker helps lead meetings in parliament.
From 2010 to 2014, he also represented Mauritius in the Pan African Parliament. This is a group of lawmakers from different African countries. He was a deputy leader on a committee that focused on transport, industry, communication, energy, science, and technology.
Ministerial Roles
From December 2014 to January 2017, Roopun was the Minister of Social Integration and Economic Empowerment. His main goal was to help people living in extreme poverty. He worked to empower groups who were struggling. During this time, a plan called the Marshall Plan Against Poverty was created. It aimed to provide support and a living allowance for very poor families.
From January 2017 to November 2019, he served as the Minister of Arts and Culture. In this role, he led an important UNESCO meeting. During this meeting, reggae music from Jamaica was added to a special list of cultural heritage.
Becoming President of Mauritius
Even though he did not run in the 2019 general election, Prithvirajsing Roopun was chosen to be the seventh President of Mauritius. The National Assembly nominated him on December 2, 2019. He was sworn in as president on the same day. When he became president, he received a special award called the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean.
