Prithvirajsing (Pradeep) Roopun is a politician from Mauritius. He was the seventh President of Mauritius from 2019 to 2024. He was born on May 24, 1959.

About Prithvirajsing Roopun
Prithvirajsing Roopun grew up in Quatre Bornes, a town in Mauritius. He comes from a Hindu family of Indian origin.
Education and Early Career
He went to New Eton College for high school. After that, he worked as a math teacher at Eden College. In 1986, he became a lawyer. He also earned a master's degree in international business law from the University of Central Lancashire.
For over 15 years, starting in 1989, Roopun was part of the board that examines legal students. He also taught law at the University of Mauritius.
Family Life
Prithvirajsing Roopun is married to Sayukta Roopun. They have four daughters named Divya, Jyotsna, Adishta, and Vedisha.
Political Journey
Roopun started his political career in 1983. He first ran for election in 1995.
Early Roles in Government
In the 2000 general election, he was elected to represent constituency No. 14. He served as the deputy chief government whip until 2004. In 2005, he became the Minister of Local Government and Solid Waste Management.
In the 2010 general election, Roopun was elected for constituency No. 9. He served as the deputy speaker of the National Assembly of Mauritius from 2010 to 2012.
Representing Mauritius in Africa
From 2010 to 2014, he was a member of the Pan African Parliament. There, he was the deputy leader of the Committee of Transport, Industry, Communications, Energy, Science, and Technology.
Ministerial Positions
From December 2014 to January 2017, Roopun was the Minister of Social Integration and Economic Empowerment. His main job was to help reduce extreme poverty and support people in need. During this time, a plan called the "Marshall Plan Against Poverty" was created with help from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). A program was also started to give money to families living in extreme poverty.
From January 2017 to November 2019, he served as the Minister of Arts and Culture. While in this role, he led an important UNESCO meeting. During this meeting, reggae music from Jamaica was added to a special list of important cultural heritage.
Becoming President of Mauritius

Even though he did not run in the 2019 general election, Prithvirajsing Roopun was chosen to be the seventh President of Mauritius. The National Assembly of Mauritius nominated him on December 2, 2019, and he was sworn in on the same day. When he became President, he received the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean award.
