Early Life and Education
Navin Ramgoolam was born in Port Louis on July 14, 1947. His parents were Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and Sushil Ramjoorawon. His father, Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, was a very important leader. He was the first Prime Minister of Mauritius.
Navin Ramgoolam's family came to Mauritius from India in the 1800s. They came from a place called Harigaon in the Bhojpur district.
Ramgoolam went to the Royal College Curepipe from 1960 to 1966. After that, he studied medicine in Ireland. He studied there from 1968 to 1975. He earned a special degree in medicine and surgery.
In 1979, Navin Ramgoolam married Veena Brizmohun. She was from Mauritius but grew up in England. She was studying social sciences in London. Many important people attended their wedding.
After his father passed away in 1985, Navin Ramgoolam almost moved to Canada. But other political leaders convinced him to come back to Mauritius. They wanted him to lead the Labour Party. Their goal was to work together to challenge Anerood Jugnauth in the next elections.
From 1985 to 1987, Ramgoolam worked as a doctor in Mauritius. In 1987, he went to the United Kingdom to study law. He studied at the London School of Economics. He finished his law degree in 1990. Then he returned to Mauritius and became the leader of the Labour Party. He ran in the 1991 general election.

Political Career
Navin Ramgoolam has had a long and active career in politics. He has been involved in many important elections in Mauritius.
1995 Elections
The Labour Party and the MMM formed a team for the 1995 Mauritian general election. This team won all 60 seats that were directly elected. The Labour Party won 35 seats, and the MMM won 25. Ramgoolam became Prime Minister, and Bérenger was his deputy.
However, their team did not stay together for long. Ramgoolam removed Bérenger from his position in 1997. Bérenger then became the leader of the opposition. Ramgoolam continued to lead the government with only his party.
2000 Elections
For the 2000 Mauritian general election, Jugnauth and Bérenger formed a new team. They agreed that Jugnauth would be Prime Minister for three years. Then, he would become President, and Bérenger would take over as Prime Minister.
Ramgoolam's party teamed up with the Mauritian Party of Xavier-Luc Duval. This party was led by Xavier-Luc Duval. The MSM/MMM team won 54 out of 60 seats. Ramgoolam kept his own seat in parliament. He then became the leader of the opposition.
2005 Elections
Ramgoolam's team, the Alliance Social, won the 2005 Mauritian general election. They won against the MSM/MMM government. He was again chosen as Prime Minister. His team won 38 out of 60 seats.
His team also won the local elections in 2006. The MSM/MMM party lost badly in these elections. These losses caused the MSM/MMM team to break up.
2010 Elections
As the 2010 Mauritian general election got closer, Ramgoolam made a plan. In 2008, he decided to support Jugnauth to become President again. This was to prevent Jugnauth from returning to parliament. Ramgoolam saw Jugnauth as a possible challenge.
Jugnauth agreed, but only if the Labour Party and the MSM formed a team. Ramgoolam also insisted that the PMSD join their team. This new team was called the Alliance de L'Avenir.
The Alliance de L'Avenir won 41 out of 60 seats. Ramgoolam stayed as Prime Minister. Pravind Jugnauth, who is Sir Anerood Jugnauth's son, became his Deputy. Later, some members of the MSM were involved in a scandal. Because of this, Ramgoolam removed the MSM from the government.
2014 Elections
The 2014 Mauritian general election was moved up to December 2014. The Labour Party and the MMM formed a new team. They suggested changing the constitution to give the President more power. Ramgoolam and Bérenger said this election was about this change. They called it the "Second Republic."
They said if their team won more than 45 seats, the constitution would change. Ramgoolam would become President, and Bérenger would be Prime Minister.
The MSM-led Alliance Lepep was against this idea. This team included the PMSD and a new party called Muvman Liberater. The Alliance Lepep won 47 out of 60 seats. The Labour-MMM team only won 13 seats. Ramgoolam lost his own seat for the first time.
On December 12, 2014, he resigned as Prime Minister. He was very upset about losing his seat. In 2017, he said that voters in his area were "stupid." He felt they were easier to influence when fewer people could read. Ramgoolam compared his loss to his father's loss in the 1982 Mauritian general election. He also said there was too much fighting within the Labour Party.
2019 Elections
Even though he lost in 2014, Ramgoolam remained the leader of the Labour Party. He ran again in the November 2019 elections. This time, he formed a team called Alliance Nationale. It included the Parti Mauricien Social Démocrate.
Instead of running in his old area, Ramgoolam chose a new one. He said a Christian priest told him the new area would bring him more luck. But Ramgoolam was not elected to the National Assembly again. He was very disappointed by losing two elections in a row. He publicly blamed women for how they voted. He also legally challenged the election results.
2024 Elections
The general election was held on November 10, 2024. The Labour Party teamed up with the MMM, Nouveau Démocrate, and Rezistans ek Alternativ. They formed the "Alliance du changement." They ran against the "Alliance Lepep" team.
The Alliance du changement won the election completely. They won all 60 seats.
Political Views
Navin Ramgoolam has shared his thoughts on important national issues. He has spoken about agreements made by the government.
He criticized an agreement from 2024 about the Chagos Archipelago. He said it was a "sellout." This agreement was made by the government of Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth.
