Dharambeer Gokhool (born 25 October 1949) is an important politician from Mauritius. He became the President of Mauritius on December 6, 2024. The President is the head of state, representing the country.

Early Life and Education
Dharam Gokhool was born on October 25, 1949. His hometown is Plaine des Roches in Mauritius. He comes from the Hindu Indo-Mauritian community. As a child, he went to Roches Noires Government School. People thought he was a very smart student there. Later, he also attended Mapou Government School.
In 1975, he earned a special degree called an MBA. He got this degree from the Faculty of Management Studies – University of Delhi in India. After finishing his studies, he came back to Mauritius. He started working at the University of Mauritius. There, he held many different jobs. He was a lecturer, an associate professor, and even the dean of a faculty.
His Political Journey
Dharam Gokhool started his career in politics in 1976. In 1980, he joined a political group called the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM). He was elected to the National Assembly in 1982. This happened when the MMM and another party, the Mauritius Socialist Party (PSM), won many seats.
Later, the MMM and PSM parties separated. Gokhool stayed with the MMM. He ran for election again in 1983 but did not win that time. In 1991, he returned to the National Assembly. He won a seat as part of an alliance between the MMM and the Militant Socialist Movement (MSM). During this time, he decided to join a different party. He moved to the Labour Party.
Gokhool also served as the mayor of Vacoas-Phoenix. This was from 1991 to 1993. He worked as a parliamentary private secretary from 1993 to 1994. After joining the Labour Party, he became its administrative secretary in 2003. Then, he was the secretary general from 2004 to 2005.
During the time Navin Ramgoolam was Prime Minister, Gokhool held important roles. He was the Minister of Education from 2005 to 2008. After that, he became the Minister of Industry, Science and Research. He held this position from 2008 to 2010. In 2014, he was considered for the role of vice president. However, he was not chosen for that specific job.
Becoming President
In the 2024 elections, Dharam Gokhool was a candidate for President of Mauritius. All the members of the National Assembly voted for him. He was chosen unanimously, meaning everyone agreed. He also received a special award. It was called the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean. In the same meeting, Robert Hungley was chosen as the vice president.
What He Does as President
On March 11, 2025, the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, visited Mauritius. He went to the State House, which is the President's official home. Prime Minister Modi gave President Gokhool some special gifts. These included gangajal (holy water) from a big festival in India. He also gave him makhana (a type of snack) and an OCI card. An OCI card is like a special visa for people of Indian origin.
President Gokhool showed Prime Minister Modi the Ayurvedic garden at the State House. This garden has plants used in traditional Indian medicine. The Mauritian Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, was also there for the visit.
