The Life of Victor Hasselblad
Victor Hasselblad was born in Gothenburg, Sweden. He grew up with a passion for photography and inventing. His family had a long history in the photography business.
Building Cameras for Sweden
During World War II, in 1940, the Swedish Air Force needed a special camera. They had found a camera from a German spy plane that was shot down. They asked Victor Hasselblad to build a similar, high-quality camera for them.
In 1941, Victor Hasselblad started his own company, Victor Hasselblad AB. This company's first job was to make cameras for the Swedish Air Force. These cameras were used for taking pictures from planes to gather information.
Cameras for Everyone
After the war, Hasselblad's company began making cameras for regular people. In 1948, they introduced their first camera for the public, called the 1600F. It was launched in New York City.
Over time, Hasselblad cameras became very popular with professional photographers. Many famous photos have been taken with Hasselblad cameras, including some from space missions!
Hasselblad and Birds
Victor Hasselblad loved to test his new camera models himself. He often did this by photographing birds. For example, he tested the Hasselblad 2000 camera for a whole week at a place called Nidingen. This is the only place in Sweden where a special bird, the black-legged kittiwake, builds its nests.
His Legacy
When Victor Hasselblad passed away, he left a large amount of money to a special group. He gave 78 million Swedish kronor (about 8 million US dollars) to the Erna and Victor Hasselblad Foundation. This foundation helps support photography and scientific research.
In 1980, after his death, Victor Hasselblad was honored. He was added to the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum. This shows how important his work was in the world of photography.
