Victoria Garrón de Doryan (born October 8, 1920 – died July 30, 2005) was an important Costa Rican teacher and writer. She is best known for being the Second Vice President of Costa Rica from 1986 to 1990. This made her the very first woman to hold such a high position in Costa Rica. During her time as Vice President, she even served as acting president more than ten times. As a writer, she wrote many books about famous Costa Ricans and also wrote poetry.

Her Early Life and Education

Victoria María Garrón Orozco was born in San José, Costa Rica, on October 8, 1920. Her parents were Claudia Orozco Casorla and Estanislao Garrón Lermitte. Her family came from France, and they encouraged her to learn about art and culture.

She went to Escuela Julia Lang for primary school. Then, she graduated from Colegio Superior de Señoritas. Victoria wanted to be a teacher. She went to a special school called a normal school. After that, she studied literature and philosophy at the University of Costa Rica. She finished her degree in 1937.

Victoria won a scholarship to study in Paris, France. There, she did more studies in social pediatrics. This is a field that combines social work with children's health.

Her Amazing Career

Becoming a Teacher and Leader

When Victoria Garrón returned to Costa Rica, she started working as a teacher. She taught at several schools, including the Normal School of Heredia. She also taught at the Anastasio Alfaro Lyceum and the Colegio Superior de Señoritas in San José.

She worked with another famous educator, Emma Gamboa Alvarado. Together, they helped improve how children were taught in Costa Rica. Victoria later became the principal of the Anastasio Alfaro Lyceum. She also joined the University of Costa Rica as a professor. She became the president of the Graduate College of Letters and Philosophy there.

Victoria was a member of the Costa Rican Association of University Women. She held many important roles on their board. Eventually, she became the president of this organization. In 1949, she went back to France. She was a fellow with UNESCO, which is a part of the United Nations. She became the Permanent Secretary for Costa Rica's work with UNESCO.

Victoria married Edward Doryan. In 1951, they had their only child, a son named Eduardo.

A Leader in Government

In 1986, Victoria Garrón was chosen to be the Second Vice President of Costa Rica. She served under President Óscar Arias Sánchez. Since 1949, Costa Rica's government has a president and two vice presidents. There are also nineteen cabinet members.

Victoria was the first woman ever elected to a vice presidency in Costa Rica. She held this important job until 1990. During her time, she acted as president of the country fourteen times. This means she was in charge when the president was away.

Her Work as a Writer

Victoria Garrón wrote poetry and one novel. But she was most famous for writing biographies. These are books about the lives of important people from Costa Rican history.

She wrote about Joaquín García Monge in 1971. She wrote about Anastasio Alfaro in 1974. In 1978, she wrote about José María Zeledón "Brillo". She also wrote about María Teresa Obregón Zamora in 1985. In 2003, she published a book about her own grandfather, François Garrón. The book was called La canción de la vida, which means The Song of Life.

Her Legacy

Victoria Garrón passed away on July 30, 2005. She died at the Blanco Cervantes Hospital in San José, Costa Rica. She was buried in the Cemetery of Santo Domingo in Heredia.

She is remembered as a pioneering woman. She was the first woman in either Central America or North America to hold the position of second vice president of a country. Her work as an educator, writer, and politician left a lasting mark on Costa Rica.
