Vida Dujmović facts for kids
Vida Dujmović is a Canadian computer scientist and mathematician. She is well-known for her work with graph theory and graph algorithms. Imagine a graph as a network of dots (called "vertices") connected by lines (called "edges"). Graph theory is the study of these networks. Graph algorithms are like special instructions that help computers solve problems using these networks.
Vida Dujmović is especially famous for her research in graph drawing, which is about making these networks look clear and easy to understand. She also studies how to measure the "width" of graphs using ideas like treewidth and queue number. These measurements help scientists understand how complex a graph is. Her work helps computers solve difficult problems faster, especially when drawing graphs.
She is a professor at the University of Ottawa in Canada, where she teaches electrical engineering and computer science. She holds a special position there called the University Research Chair in Structural and Algorithmic Graph Theory.
Early Life and Education
Vida Dujmović started her studies in telecommunications and computer science at the University of Zagreb in Croatia. She graduated in 1996.
After that, she moved to Canada to continue her education at McGill University. She earned her master's degree in computer science in 2000. She then completed her Ph.D. (a very advanced degree) in 2004. Her Ph.D. project was about "Track Layouts of Graphs." Her work was so good that it won the 2005 NSERC Doctoral Prize from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
Her Career Journey
After finishing her Ph.D., Vida Dujmović worked as a postdoctoral researcher at different universities. This means she continued her research and studies after her Ph.D. She worked at Carleton University and then again at McGill University.
In 2012, she became an assistant professor at Carleton University. The next year, in 2013, she moved to the University of Ottawa, where she is a professor today.
Awards and Recognition
Vida Dujmović has received several important awards for her excellent research. In 2023, the University of Ottawa honored her with the Glinski Award for Excellence in Research. They also gave her the University Research Chair in Structural and Algorithmic Graph Theory, which is a special title for top researchers.
She was also invited to speak at the 9th European Congress of Mathematics, which is a big event where important mathematicians share their discoveries.
