Early Career and Soviet Times
During the time Latvia was part of the Soviet Union, Vilnis Edvīns Bresis worked in farming. He held many important management jobs in agriculture. He was also active in the Communist Party. This party was in charge of the government back then.
Towards the end of the Soviet period, he became the Chairman of the Council of Ministers. This role was like being the Prime Minister or main leader of the government.
Supporting Latvia's Independence
Vilnis Edvīns Bresis believed that Latvia should be an independent country. He supported this idea strongly. On May 4, 1990, he voted for the declaration of renewed independence. This was a very important step for Latvia to become free again.
Under his leadership, Latvia started to make big changes in farming. They began to break up large "collective farms." These were big farms owned by the state. Instead, they created the first 8,000 privately owned farms. This allowed people to own their own land and farm it.
After Latvia Became Independent
