Violet Edith Gwynllyn Brooke-Hunt (born June 18, 1870 – died June 9, 1910) was an English writer and social worker. A social worker helps people and communities. Violet was very active during the Boer War. She worked hard to make things better for British soldiers in hospitals and army camps.

Early Life and Education

Violet Brooke-Hunt was born in a place called Tibberton, Gloucestershire, in England. Her father, Charles George Hunt, was an officer in the navy. Her mother was Gertrude Price Hunt. Violet went to school at Cheltenham Ladies' College.

Helping Others and War Work

Violet Brooke-Hunt started helping people when she was young. When she moved to London, she kept working with young men and boys. She set up clubs for them, organized sports, and created classes to help them learn job skills. She also wrote small books and stories that taught good lessons.

During the Boer War (a war in South Africa), Violet traveled there. She focused on making life better for the British soldiers. She helped arrange church services, fun activities, and made sure they had better food and cleaner places to stay. She also set up classes and reading rooms where soldiers could learn and read.

For all her hard work, Violet received a special medal. She was also given the title "Lady of Grace of St John of Jerusalem." In 1901, she wrote a book about her experiences during the war called A Woman's Memories of the War.

After the War

When Violet returned to England in 1902, she continued to use her amazing energy and organizing skills. She helped gather soldiers who had fought in the Boer War for the crowning ceremony of Edward VII, who became king.

Later, she helped start other important groups in London. One of these was the Union Jack Club, which was a place for soldiers and sailors. She also helped create the Women's Unionist and Tariff Reform Association.

Violet Brooke-Hunt wrote several books. Some of her well-known books include:

  • The Story of Westminster Abbey (published in 1904)
  • Lord Roberts, a Biography (published in 1914)

Later Life

Violet Brooke-Hunt was going to marry Charles Bathurst in 1897, but the wedding did not happen. She passed away just before her 40th birthday in 1910. Doctors believed her heart failed because she was so exhausted from all her hard work.
