Virgil Lamar Ware (born December 6, 1949 – died September 15, 1963) was a young African American student. He was sadly shot and killed after a terrible church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama. His death was a very sad event during the Civil Rights Movement.

Virgil's Early Life

Virgil grew up in Pratt City, a part of Birmingham, Alabama. He was the third of six brothers in his family.

A Bright Student

He was a bright student in eighth grade, earning good grades. Virgil also played on the football team. He dreamed of becoming a lawyer when he grew up.

Working as a Paperboy

At the time of the tragic event, Virgil worked as a paperboy with his brother, James. They delivered newspapers together.

A Tragic Day

On September 15, 1963, a very sad event happened in Birmingham. A church bombing had just occurred, causing a lot of sadness and anger in the city.

The Incident

Two 16-year-old boys, Larry Joe Sims and Michael Lee Farley, were riding a motor scooter. They had bought a small gun a few days earlier. They saw Virgil and his brother James riding a bicycle. Virgil and James did not know about the church bombing. Farley told Sims to shoot the gun to scare them. Sadly, Virgil was shot in the cheek and chest.

The Outcome

The two boys were later found responsible for Virgil's death. They were given a short jail sentence and then put on probation.

Remembering Virgil

For many years, Virgil Ware was buried in an unmarked grave. This means there was no special stone or marker for his resting place.

A Proper Burial

However, on May 6, 2004, thanks to donations from the community, Virgil was moved to a new burial place. Now, he has a bronze marker that honors his memory.

Honored in Birmingham

In 2013, Virgil Lamar Ware was honored by being added to Birmingham’s Gallery of Distinguished Citizens. This is a special recognition for people who have made an important impact.

A Memorial to Peace

Virgil's name is also on a memorial in Birmingham. This memorial was created in November 1989 to remember all the people who lost their lives during the Civil Rights Movement.

Family's Involvement

Because of Virgil's death, his family became very involved in the Civil Rights Movement. They worked hard to fight for fairness and equal rights for everyone.
