Her Art and Projects
Virginia Nimarkoh is interested in how people understand who they are, especially when thinking about their past. She explores how we record our lives, how we choose to remember things, and how our memories might be different from what really happened.
Early Works and Photo Series
In 1990, some of Virginia Nimarkoh's photo artworks were chosen for an important show called East Country Yard Show. This exhibition was put together by artists Henry Bond and Sarah Lucas.
In 1993, she created The Phone Box: Art in Telephone Boxes. This project involved putting original artworks inside telephone boxes. She also made an artist's book called Postcard, which was made of 144 color postcards that formed one big picture.
Her photo series Urban Utopias started in 2005 and is still ongoing. This series shows different green spaces in South East London, like community gardens (allotments), city farms, and parks.
Curating and Collaborations
In 2008, Virginia Nimarkoh organized a special project called Edge of a Dream: Utopia, Landscape & Contemporary Photography. This project looked at how artists show perfect or ideal places in nature through photography, especially in today's world. It received support from the Arts & Humanities Research Council and several universities. The project included artists from different countries, like Simryn Gill and Mandy Lee Jandrell. A book about the project, also called Edge of a Dream, was published in 2011.
