Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Virginia Agyeiwah Nimarkoh (born in January 1967) is a British artist and activist who lives in London. She studied at Goldsmiths College London from 1986 to 1989, earning a high-level degree in Fine Art. Virginia's work often combines photography and projects where she helps choose and arrange art. She also works on projects that help communities and improve the environment across London. Currently, she focuses on food, running a raw food business and a social enterprise that helps people get enough healthy food.

Her Art and Projects

Virginia Nimarkoh is interested in how people understand who they are, especially when thinking about their past. She explores how we record our lives, how we choose to remember things, and how what really happened, what we remember, and the photos we have of the past can be different.

Early Works and Exhibitions

In 1990, some of Virginia's artworks using photos were chosen by Henry Bond and Sarah Lucas for their exhibition called East Country Yard Show.

In 1993, Virginia created The Phone Box: Art in Telephone Boxes, which was a special edition of 300 books with original artworks. She also made Postcard, an artist's book with 144 color postcards that formed one large image.

Urban Utopias: Art in London's Green Spaces

Her photo series Urban Utopias started in 2005 and is still ongoing. This project looks at different spaces in South East London, showing pictures of allotments (small garden plots), city farms, and parks.

Edge of a Dream: Curating Photography

In 2008, Virginia Nimarkoh organized a research project called Edge of a Dream: Utopia, Landscape & Contemporary Photography. This project explored how artists show perfect landscapes in recent art photography, especially in the context of the worldwide economy. The project received funding from the Arts & Humanities Research Council. It also had support from Camberwell College of Arts, Goldsmiths University of London, and Hand Eye Projects.

The project featured artists from different countries, including Simryn Gill from Australia, Mandy Lee Jandrell from South Africa and the UK, Virginia Nimarkoh from the UK, and David Spero from the UK. New articles were written for the project by Anthony Iles from Mute magazine, Kate Soper from London Metropolitan University, and John Wood and Paul Halliday from Goldsmiths. A book based on the project, also called Edge of a Dream, was published in 2011 by Affram Books.

We The People: Film and Activism

In 2019, Virginia Nimarkoh worked with Fan Sissoko on a short film called We The People. This film was made in partnership with the Advocacy Academy, which is the UK's first youth activist campus located in Brixton. The music for the film was created by Dubmorphology. The Museum of London asked them to create this project.
