About Viscainoa Plants
These special plants are found only in one part of the world: north-western Mexico.
Types of Viscainoa
There are two main types, or species, of Viscainoa plants that scientists know about:
- Viscainoa geniculata (first described by Kellogg, then by Greene)
- Viscainoa pinnata (first described by I.M. Johnston, then by Gentry)
How Viscainoa Got Its Name
The name Viscainoa was chosen to honor a famous Spanish explorer named Sebastián Vizcaíno. He lived a long time ago, from 1548 to around 1625. Vizcaíno was a soldier, a businessman, and a diplomat who explored different parts of the world.
When Viscainoa Was Discovered
Scientists first officially described and named the Viscainoa genus in a book called Pittonia. This happened in 1888, and the description was on page 163 of the first volume.
