The title was given to a person named James Crichton. He was the younger son of another important person, James Crichton of Frendraught. At the same time, the title Lord Crichton was also created for him. The Crichton family of Frendraught had a long history. They were related to William Crichton, 1st Lord Crichton, who was a very important official called a Lord Chancellor under King James II.

Why Did the Title End?

The fourth Viscount, Lewis Crichton, was involved in a historical event called the 1689 rising. He supported a group known as the Jacobites. He fought alongside Dundee, a famous leader of the Jacobites.

Because of his actions, the government took away his title. This happened on 14 July 1690. When a title is "forfeit," it means it is taken away and no longer exists. This is how the Viscount of Frendraught title ended.

Much later, in 1827, a person named David Maitland Makgill tried to claim the title. He was a descendant of the first Viscount's oldest daughter. However, his attempt to get the title back was not successful.
