Vitalite is a type of spread that you can put on bread or toast. It is made mostly from sunflower oil. This spread is produced by a company called Dairy Crest in a town called Kirkby, which is in Merseyside, England.
Vitalite first started being made in 1983. Back then, it was produced by a company known as Kraft General Foods. Later, in July 1996, another company named St Ivel bought Vitalite. Then, in November 2002, Dairy Crest bought St Ivel, and Vitalite became part of Dairy Crest. In 2008, Vitalite was changed to be a dairy-free spread. This means it does not contain any milk products, making it a good choice for vegans. Vegans are people who choose not to eat any animal products, including dairy.
Vitalite's Fun Advertising
Vitalite became very well-known in the United Kingdom because of its fun advertisements. A famous advertising campaign started in the 1980s. These ads featured dancing sunflowers and a sun that sang!
The songs in the ads were a funny version of a popular song called Israelites by Desmond Dekker. This advertising campaign was very popular and ran until 1994. One of the funny song lyrics from the ads went like this:
- "Wake up in the morning wantin' some breakfast. What sunflower spread do I lay on my bread? Ohhh, Ohhh, Vitalite."
