Voltron is the name of several comic book series. These comics are based on the popular Voltron television show. Voltron is a giant robot that brave heroes pilot to fight bad guys in space. The stories follow five young soldiers. They are chosen to find Voltron in deep space. Their mission is to use Voltron to protect the galaxy from evil.
Early Voltron Comics
In 1985, a company called Modern Comics made a short series of three comic books. These comics were based on the Lion Voltron TV show.
Devil's Due Comics
In 2002, a comic book company called Devil's Due announced something exciting. They said they could now make Voltron comic books!
Devil's Due first released a five-issue mini-series. It started with a special #0 issue. This series focused on the Lion Voltron. It also started the Voltron story fresh for new readers. After that, Devil's Due began an ongoing series. This series was paused in 2005 after its eleventh issue. It stopped because it wasn't selling enough copies.
In 2008, Devil's Due shared some good news. They said they would collect all the comics into one big book. This book was called a Voltron Omnibus. It included the five-issue mini-series and the eleven issues of the ongoing series. It also had an unreleased twelfth issue. This final issue helped finish all the stories.
Later in 2008, Devil's Due released a new five-issue mini-series. This series continued the story from where the ongoing series left off. It explored more about how Lion Voltron was first made. The story went back 12,000 years into the past. It showed Voltron as a single robot, like a knight. It was created by both magic users and scientists.
During a battle with the first evil Drule Empire, Voltron was tricked. The evil witch Haggar made Voltron land on a special black comet. This comet had super strong gravity. Haggar then attacked Voltron, breaking it into five pieces. But a sorcerer helped. The five pieces turned into the five lions as they landed on the planet Arus.
The first five-issue mini-series was also made into a motion comic in 2007. A motion comic is like a cartoon made from comic book panels. Its sequel, Voltron: Defenders of the Universe - PARADISE LOST, was also a motion comic. It told the story from the first part of the ongoing comic series.
Dynamite Entertainment Comics
In 2011, another comic book company, Dynamite Entertainment, announced they had the rights to make Voltron comics.
Dynamite started their Voltron comic series in December 2011. This series ran for 12 issues until May 2013. They also released two other short series. One was called Voltron: Year One in 2012, which had 6 issues. The other was Voltron: From the Ashes, which also had 6 issues and came out in 2015-2016.
