Vortex Spring is a super cool place in Florida where you can go swimming, camping, and especially diving! It's the biggest diving spot in all of Florida, located near a town called Ponce de Leon.

What is Vortex Spring?

Vortex Spring is a beautiful natural spring that offers lots of fun activities. It's a great spot for families and friends to enjoy the outdoors.

The Spring's Water

Vortex Spring is a cold, clear freshwater spring. About 28 million gallons of water flow out of it every day! The main part of the spring is like a big, round pool about 200 feet wide with sloped sides. There's also a cave that connects the spring to a huge underground water system called the Floridan aquifer.

The water in the spring stays at a steady 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius), so it's always refreshing. It's usually very clear, too! The water from the spring flows into a nearby stream called Otter Creek. You can see many fish in the spring, like large carp swimming in the main pool and freshwater eels living in the cave. The cave itself has been explored for over 1,600 feet!

Fun Things to Do at the Park

Vortex Spring has many cool things for visitors to enjoy. Besides the amazing spring, you can find:

  • Diving boards
  • Rope swings
  • Slides that splash you right into the swimming area
  • Places to camp
  • Picnic spots
  • A basketball court
  • A volleyball court
  • Paddle boats
  • Floats
  • Canoes

There are also places to stay overnight, a shop for diving gear, and changing rooms with warm showers.

Diving Adventures

Vortex Spring is a very popular place for diving. Both people who are just starting to dive and those with lots of experience love to visit.

Learning to Dive

If you want to learn how to dive, this is a great place! The park offers special dive training. There are two underwater platforms about 20 feet deep that are often used for beginner diving lessons. There's even a "talk box" underwater where divers can swim in and chat with each other!

Exploring the Cave

The entrance to the spring's cave is about 58 feet below the surface. It's a big opening, about 9 by 12 feet. Inside the cave, there's a handrail along the wall to help divers. You can go about 310 feet into the cave before a steel gate blocks further passage. Experienced divers are allowed to go deeper, up to 115 feet.

Safety First: The Cave's Story

The cave at Vortex Spring has an important history about safety. Years ago, some divers had accidents while exploring it. Because of this, special rules were made to keep divers safe.

Now, there's a locked gate at the entrance to the deeper, more challenging part of the cave. Only divers who have a special "cave diving" certificate are allowed to go past this gate. A staff member from Vortex Spring will unlock the gate for them and often go with them to make sure everyone stays safe. This helps make sure that only highly trained divers explore the deepest parts of the cave.
