The Vought F6U Pirate was an early jet fighter plane used by the U.S. Navy. It was one of the first military aircraft to use a single turbojet engine after World War II. This special plane was designed to fly from aircraft carriers.

About the Pirate Jet

The Vought F6U Pirate made its very first flight in October 1946. This was an exciting time for aviation, as jet engines were still quite new. The Pirate was built by a company called Vought.

Why Was It Special?

The Pirate was special because it was one of the first planes to use a jet engine for the U.S. Navy. Jet engines are much faster and more powerful than the propeller engines used before. This helped planes fly much quicker!

How Many Were Built?

Not many Pirate jets were made. Only 65 of these planes were ever built. They were used by the U.S. Navy for a short time, between 1947 and 1950. Even though it didn't serve for long, it helped the Navy learn a lot about jet planes.
