Võ Thị Viên was a royal wife of Emperor Thiệu Trị of the Nguyễn Dynasty in Vietnamese history. She was known for being one of the Emperor's favorite wives and for having many children with him. Her exact birth and death dates are not known.
Her Life in the Palace
Võ Thị Viên was born in Huế, a city in Vietnam. Her father was Võ Hữu Linh, a high-ranking official. She became a royal wife to Thiệu Trị even before he became Emperor.
Even though she was not his main wife, Emperor Thiệu Trị showed her special affection. He loved her more than his other main wives. This shows that his feelings for her were not based on her family's status.
Rising Through the Ranks
When Thiệu Trị became Emperor in 1841, Lady Viên was given the title Cung tần, which means Imperial Maid. This was her first official royal title.
In 1843, she was promoted again. She became Tam giai Lương tần, meaning Third-rank Royal Concubine Lương tần. Her importance in the palace continued to grow.
By 1846, she reached an even higher position. She was elevated to Nhất giai Lương phi, which means First-rank Royal Concubine Lương phi. This was a very high rank for a royal wife.
Her Children
Lương phi Võ Thị Viên and another royal wife, Đoan tần Trương Thị Thận, had the most children with Emperor Thiệu Trị. Võ Thị Viên gave birth to six children:
