It is now near the main office of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

The Story of the Kellogg House

How W.K. Kellogg Started His Company

W.K. Kellogg began working at the Battle Creek Sanitarium in 1880. His older brother, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, was the main doctor there. While working, W.K. experimented with new foods made from grains. He wanted to find good substitutes for meat and bread.

One day, he accidentally discovered how to make cereal flakes. This discovery changed everything! In 1906, W.K. Kellogg left the sanitarium. He decided to start his own company. It was first called the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company. Later, it became the Kellogg Company we know today. Even with other companies already making cereal, Kellogg's company quickly became very successful.

Building and Moving the House

In 1909, Kellogg moved into a house on West Van Buren Street. In 1918, he married his second wife, Dr. Carrie Staines. She was also a doctor at the sanitarium. After they married, Kellogg had a new house built right next door for them. This is the house we call the W.K. Kellogg House.

The Kelloggs lived in this house until 1924. Then, they moved into an apartment building they owned. W.K. Kellogg continued to own the house into the 1940s.

In 1990, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation was building a new main office. They bought the Kellogg House. In March of that year, they moved it. The house traveled from its original spot to a new one. It now sits across the river from the Foundation's new headquarters. The Foundation still owns the house today.

The W.K. Kellogg House has two stories. It has a special "T" shape when you look down from above. The roof is low and covered with slate. It has wide edges that stick out. There are also small, round windows called dormers on the roof.

The front of the house has French doors. These doors have a window above them. There is also a row of paired windows on the second floor. A brick patio is located below the French doors. Other sides of the house have regular windows on both floors.

Inside, the first floor has a living room, a sunroom, a dining room, a kitchen, and a pantry. Upstairs, on the second floor, you will find four bedrooms. There is also another sunroom and two bathrooms.
