WFF 'N PROOF facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

WFF 'N PROOF is a special game that teaches you about logic. It's like a puzzle where you learn how to think clearly and solve problems using rules of logic. A smart person named Layman Allen, who used to teach at Yale Law School and the University of Michigan, created this game.

How to Play WFF 'N PROOF

In WFF 'N PROOF, players work with "well-formed formulas" (WFFs). A WFF is like a correct sentence in the language of logic. Your main goal is to use logical rules to build a "proof." A proof is a step-by-step way to show that something is true.

The game is usually played with two or three people. Here's how it generally works:

  • One player rolls special cubes.
  • They then choose a WFF from the cubes to be the "Goal." This Goal is what everyone needs to prove.
  • Each player then tries to create a proof that ends with that Goal.
  • Your "Solution" is the starting points (called "Premises") you used and the logical "Rules" you followed to reach the Goal.

Using the Game Mat

The game has a mat with different sections:

  • Essentials: If you move a cube here, you must use it in your proof. It's a key part of your solution.
  • Permitted Premises: Cubes in this section can be used as starting points (premises) for your proof.
  • Permitted Rules: Cubes here can be used as logical rules in your proof.

Players take turns moving cubes to these sections. This means players can change the game as they go, making it harder or easier for others to find a solution!

Challenges in the Game

Sometimes, a player might think another player made a mistake. They can "challenge" them! There are a few types of challenges:

  • A-Flub: The challenger thinks they can find a solution using the cubes available, plus one more cube from the unused ones.
  • P-Flub (Challenge Impossible): The challenger believes the player whose turn it was cannot find a solution with the cubes they have.
  • C-A-Flub: The challenger thinks someone (either the current player or an earlier one) missed an A-Flub opportunity.

After a challenge, at least one player must show their correct solution on paper.

Scoring Points

Here's how points are given out after a challenge:

  • The player who wins the challenge gets 10 points.
  • The player who loses the challenge gets 6 points.
  • If there's a third player, they choose to support either the challenger or the person being challenged. They score points based on if their choice was correct.
