What Was WWF Over the Edge?
"Over the Edge" was a series of professional wrestling events. The WWF created these shows. They were broadcast as pay-per-views, meaning people paid to watch them live on TV. Only two "Over the Edge" events ever took place. The series ended due to a tragic event at the second show.
The First Event: Over the Edge: In Your House (1998)
The first "Over the Edge" show was called "Over the Edge: In Your House." It happened on May 31, 1998. The event took place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The wrestling matches were held at the Wisconsin Center Arena.
The main event was a big match for the WWF Championship. Stone Cold Steve Austin defended his title against Dude Love. It was a special kind of match called a No Disqualification and Falls Count Anywhere match. This meant there were no rules about disqualifications, and wrestlers could fight anywhere. Vince McMahon was the special guest referee for this match. Stone Cold Steve Austin won the match and kept his championship.
The Second Event: Over the Edge (1999)
The second and last "Over the Edge" event was on May 23, 1999. This show was held in Kansas City, Missouri, at the Kemper Arena. This event is remembered for a very sad reason.
During the show, a wrestler named Owen Hart was preparing for his entrance. He was supposed to come down from the top of the arena. Sadly, he fell from a high point and passed away. This tragic accident happened before his scheduled match. Owen Hart was going to wrestle The Godfather for the WWF Intercontinental Championship.
Despite the accident, the show continued. In the main event, The Undertaker wrestled Stone Cold Steve Austin. The Undertaker won the match and became the new WWF Champion. However, the sad death of Owen Hart overshadowed everything else that happened at the event. Because of this tragedy, the "Over the Edge" pay-per-view series was stopped.
