The Wabash Combination Depot-Shenandoah, also known as the Shenandoah Wabash Depot, is a cool old building in Shenandoah, Iowa, United States. This historic train station was built in 1903. It replaced an older, smaller building that was no longer big enough.

The depot was designed by the Wabash Railroad. It served as a place where people could catch trains and where goods could be loaded and unloaded. This type of building is called a "combination" depot because it handled both passengers and freight.

What is the Shenandoah Wabash Depot?

The Shenandoah Wabash Depot is a historic train station. It was built over 100 years ago in 1903. This building was very important for the town of Shenandoah. It helped people travel and businesses send goods.

The depot was designed by the Wabash Railroad company itself. They used a standard design for many of their stations. This design made the building look special.

A Busy Train Station

The depot was a very busy place. It was an "island station," meaning it sat right in the middle of the train tracks. Trains would pull up on both sides of the building.

The track at the back was used for loading and unloading freight. This is where goods like crops or supplies would be moved on and off the trains. The main tracks were along the front. These were used for passenger trains. People would wait inside the depot for their train to arrive.

Cool Architecture Styles

The Shenandoah Wabash Depot has a unique look. It was built using two popular styles of architecture from that time: Queen Anne and Stick-Eastlake.

The building is a single story. It is made of wood. It has a gabled roof, which means the roof has two sloping sides that meet at a ridge. It also has wide, overhanging eaves. These eaves are the parts of the roof that hang over the walls. They helped protect people from the sun or rain.

Moving to a New Home

Over time, trains changed. The depot was no longer used as a train station. It was bought by the Wabash Trace Nature Trail. This group helps turn old railroad lines into trails for walking and biking.

The Wabash Trace Nature Trail moved the depot to Sportsman's Park in Shenandoah. It is now located along the Burlington Northern tracks. This move helped save the historic building.

A Place in History

The Shenandoah Wabash Depot is a very important building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. This means it is recognized as a special place in American history. It helps us remember the past and how people traveled and traded goods long ago.
