The Walter Field House is a historic home located on Reading Road in northern Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. It was built in the 1880s for a successful local businessman. This house shows off popular building styles from the late 1800s. A famous architect from Cincinnati designed it. Today, it is recognized as an important historic site.

A Special Home in Cincinnati

Walter Field was an important business leader in Cincinnati. He was the president of companies like the American Cotton Oil Company. He also led the Cincinnati Ice Manufacturing and Cold Storage Company. Mr. Field moved into this house shortly after it was finished in 1884.

For his new home, Field chose Samuel Hannaford as the architect. Hannaford was born in England. He became very famous in Cincinnati in the 1870s. This was after he designed the Cincinnati Music Hall. Many of Hannaford's homes in Cincinnati are made of stone or brick. But the Field House is different; it is a wooden frame building.

Unique Design and Style

The Walter Field House was built near the end of Hannaford's Victorian design period. It includes many Victorian details. For example, it has decorative shingles and special carvings. These features are typical of the Eastlake Movement style. However, most of the house is built in the Shingle Style.

The house has an interesting, uneven shape. It features a roof with many different gables (the triangular parts of a wall under a sloping roof). There is also a large porch across the front of the house. On the southern side, you can see an eight-sided gazebo. The porch and gazebo are decorated with many spindled sections. These parts make the two-and-a-half-story building look very grand. Other parts, like a small turret on the northern side, are harder to see from the street.

A Recognized Historic Place

In 1980, the Walter Field House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a very important building because of its unique architecture. It was part of a larger group of buildings in Cincinnati that Samuel Hannaford designed. These buildings were all added to the Register at the same time.

The building is no longer a single family home. By the time it was listed as historic, an addition had been built. The inside of the house was also changed. It was divided into twenty-four smaller studio apartments.
