Who Was Walter Scott?
Walter Scott was born as Walter Scott of Highchester. He became known as the 1st Earl of Tarras. He lived in Scotland during the 1600s. This was a time when kings and queens ruled, and noble families held a lot of power.
His Family Life
Walter Scott married his cousin, Mary Scott, 3rd Countess of Buccleuch, in 1659. She was also from a very important Scottish family. Sadly, Mary died just two years later in 1661, and they did not have any children.
Later, in 1677, Walter married Helen Hepburn. They had several children together.
Becoming an Earl
In 1660, Walter Scott was given two special titles: Earl of Tarras and Baron Almoor and Campcastill. These titles were part of the Peerage of Scotland. The Peerage is a system of noble titles in the United Kingdom.
His earldom was a special kind called a "life peerage." This meant he would hold the title only for his own life. After he died, the title would not pass to his children. This was done to make him equal in rank to his first wife, Mary.
Later Years and Challenges
In 1685, Walter Scott faced a difficult time. He was "attainted," which meant he temporarily lost his titles and some of his rights. However, he was "restored" in 1687. This means his titles and rights were given back to him. Walter Scott passed away in 1693.
