Auld Wat of Harden, a painting by Tom Scott

Walter Scott of Harden (born in 1550, died in 1629) was a famous person from Scottish history. He was also known as Auld Wat. He lived in the 1500s near the border between Scotland and England. During that time, he was known as a "border reiver." This meant he was a leader who sometimes raided other areas to get supplies for his family and friends.

Auld Wat's Life and Adventures

Walter Scott was born in 1550. His father was William Scott of Harden. From a young age, it was clear he would take over his father's lands.

Wat was known for leading raids across the border into England. He also sometimes raided other parts of Scotland. In 1592, he was involved in a plan against King James VI of Scotland. This plan was led by the Earl of Bothwell. Because of this, Wat was declared an outlaw.

The Rescue of Kinmont Willie

One of Wat's most famous adventures happened in 1596. He helped rescue a man named Kinmont Willie Armstrong. Kinmont Willie was held in Carlisle Castle, which was a very strong English fortress. Wat worked with his chief, Walter Scott of Buccleuch, to free him. This daring rescue showed how brave and clever the border reivers could be.

The Flower of Yarrow and the Spurs

In 1567, Wat Scott married Mary Scott. She was known as the "Flower of Yarrow" because she was very beautiful. They lived at Harden Castle. There is a famous story about Mary. When food was running low, she would serve a platter with a pair of spurs instead of meat. This was a clever way to tell the men they needed to ride out and find more food from their neighbors!

In 1592, King James VI ordered Wat's home at Harden to be destroyed. This happened after Wat joined the Earl of Bothwell in attacking the King at Falkland Palace.

Wat married again in 1598. His second wife was Margaret Edgar.
