Wamaw Kʼawiil facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Wamaw Kʼawiil was an important ruler of the ancient Maya city of Calakmul. He lived in the 8th century, a long time ago! Calakmul was a powerful city, sometimes called Kaan, and Wamaw Kʼawiil was its "Ajaw," which means its king or lord.

Calakmul's Power and Challenges

Calakmul was one of the biggest and most powerful cities in the Maya world. It often competed with another great city, Tikal. In AD 695, Tikal defeated Calakmul in a big battle. This loss made Calakmul less powerful than it used to be.

Life After a Big Defeat

Even after the defeat by Tikal, Calakmul still had some influence. It tried to keep its control over other smaller kingdoms. For example, Calakmul had once been very strong, reaching far to the west and south. Its rulers had shown great power over places like Moral-Reforma and Dos Pilas.

Wamaw Kʼawiil's Time

Wamaw Kʼawiil became king after the big defeat in 695. During his rule, Calakmul was still mentioned in other cities. For instance, a stone monument in Quiriguá, a city far to the southeast, mentions a king from Calakmul in 736. The name on this monument is hard to read, but experts think it might be Wamaw Kʼawiil. This shows that Calakmul still had connections across the Maya lands.

New Discoveries About Wamaw Kʼawiil

In 2007, archaeologists found a new stone carving that tells us more about Wamaw Kʼawiil. This small stone panel was found in a private collection.

What the Panel Shows

The panel clearly names Wamaw Kʼawiil as king. It also shows his special "emblem glyph," which was like a symbol for his city and his royal family, the "Snake" dynasty. The most exciting part is that the panel shows Wamaw Kʼawiil playing a ball game. He is playing with the king of Hix Witz, another Maya city.

What This Means

This discovery is very important. It suggests that even after the second defeat by Tikal around 736, Calakmul still had friendly relationships with some of its nearby cities. Playing a ball game together was a way for kings to show their alliances and power. It means Calakmul still had a network of cities that looked up to it, even if its power was not as strong as before.
