Wanny van Gils (born February 10, 1959 – died July 28, 2018) was a talented Dutch football player. He was also a coach later in his life. Wanny was known for playing as a forward, which means he was good at scoring goals!
Wanny van Gils: A Football Story
Wanny van Gils played for several different football clubs during his career. He spent time with teams in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Playing for Clubs
Wanny started his professional career with NAC Breda. He played there from 1978 to 1981. After that, he moved to Belgium to play for Beringen for two years.
He then returned to the Netherlands to join Willem II. He played for Willem II for five years, from 1983 to 1988. Wanny finished his playing career back at NAC Breda, where he played until 1991.
One of his most famous moments was a fantastic solo goal he scored against Eindhoven in 1991. A solo goal is when one player takes the ball a long way and scores all by themselves. For many years, people called it "the lost goal." This was because there seemed to be no video of it anywhere!
Life After the Game
After he stopped playing professional football, Wanny van Gils started a new career. He became a consultant who helped people with insurance. Later, he even started his own business that offered financial services.
Wanny also continued to be involved in football. He became a manager for a Dutch football club called VV TSC. This shows he always loved the game, even after his playing days were over.
