The Ware–Lyndon House is a very old and special house in Athens, Georgia. It was built around 1850 and looks like a grand Italian-style building. Today, it's a place where people can enjoy art and learn about history. It's also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's important to protect because of its history.
About the Ware–Lyndon House
This house is located at 211 Hoyt Street. It was built about 170 years ago. The house has two floors and shows off an "Italianate" style. This means it has features like low-pitched roofs and tall windows, similar to buildings from Italy.
The first owner, Edward R. Ware, sold the house in 1880. The city of Athens bought it in 1939. A big project to fix up the house happened in 1960. In 1976, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes places that are important to American history. The Ware–Lyndon House is the only building left from the old "Lickskillet neighborhood." This was once a very fancy part of Athens.
Who Lived Here?
Edward R. Ware came to Athens in 1829. He was a very important doctor. He worked during the time before, during, and after the American Civil War.
The Ware family loved to host parties at their home. One person, William Hope Hull, said that Mrs. Ware was "full of life." She loved having people over, both old and young, rich and poor. She was very welcoming and always ready for a party. Her home was a main place for social events in Athens.
Edward S. Lyndon was the second owner of the house. He was a druggist, which is like a pharmacist. He also owned a mill called Lyndon Mill.
What is it Now?
Since 1973, the house has been a community arts center. It's known as the Lyndon House Arts Center since 1999. A large new part was built next to the old house. This new section has art galleries, studios, classrooms, and offices. It was designed to match the Italianate style of the original house.
The original house still has furniture from its time. You can take a self-guided tour to see how people lived long ago.
