What Makes Warnborough Green Special?

Warnborough Green is made up of two "wet meadows." These are grassy fields that stay damp or wet for much of the year. They are located on either side of the River Whitewater, which helps keep the soil moist.

Amazing Plants: The Sedges

These wet meadows are home to many different kinds of plants. One type of plant that loves wet places is called a sedge. Warnborough Green has thirteen different types of sedges!

Types of Sedges You Might Find

Some of the sedges found here are quite rare. They include the distant sedge, flea sedge, and brown sedge. Sedges look a bit like grasses, but they have solid, triangular stems, while grasses have hollow, round stems.

Cool Insects: Rare Flies

Warnborough Green is also a great place for insects. It is especially important for two types of flies that are very rare in the United Kingdom. These insects are called "invertebrates" because they don't have a backbone.

Special Flies of Warnborough Green

The two rare flies found here are the soldier fly (scientific name: Stratiomys potamida) and the hoverfly (scientific name: Xylota abiens). These flies are important for the ecosystem, helping with things like pollination and being a food source for other animals. Protecting their home helps them survive.
