The Warrior Hotel is a famous old hotel in downtown Sioux City, Iowa, United States. It first opened its doors in 1930 and was beautifully restored in 2020.
About the Warrior Hotel
The Warrior Hotel is a tall building with eleven stories. It stands about 128 feet (39 m) (39 meters) high. A Kansas City architect named Alonzo H. Gentry designed it. He used the popular Art Deco style, which was new and exciting in the 1930s. The outside of the hotel is made of brick. It has special decorations made from terra cotta.
A Hotel with Many Names
The Warrior Hotel first opened on December 20, 1930. It was built by a company called Eppley Hotel Company. In 1956, a bigger company, Sheraton Hotels, bought Eppley. The hotel then changed its name to the Sheraton-Warrior.
Sheraton updated the hotel in 1962. They moved the main entrance (lobby) from the second floor to the ground floor. They also changed the hotel into a motel. It was then called the Sheraton-Warrior Motor Inn.
In 1968, Sheraton sold the hotel to Gotham Hotels Limited. The hotel's name changed again to the Warrior Motor Inn. The hotel closed in 1971 for a short time. But it was sold and reopened the next year. Its new name was the Aventino Motor Inn. Sadly, the hotel closed for good in 1976.
A Historic Landmark
Even though it was closed, the Warrior Hotel was important. In 1985, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes buildings that are important to history.
For a while, the building had some problems. But the city decided not to tear it down. They knew it was a special part of history. It would also cost a lot of money to demolish it.
Plans for the Future
In 2006, people tried to turn the building into homes for older adults. They took out the inside parts of the hotel. But the project stopped because they couldn't get enough money.
Later, in 2012, a group wanted to build a casino. They planned to use the Warrior Hotel and the building next to it, the Davidson Building. But state officials chose a different location for the casino.
Finally, in 2017, a new plan was announced. The Warrior Hotel and the Davidson Building would be renovated. They would become a modern 148-room Marriott Autograph Hotel. This big project cost about $73 million. The hotel reopened in September 2020, looking beautiful and new again!
